Week 3 Assignment #1 ELA - Reading


Stage 1 - Desired Results 

Established Goals: 

RI. 6.3 Analyze in detail how a key individual, event, or idea is introduced,illustrated, and elaborated in a text. 

RI. 6.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in text, including figurative, connotative, and technical meaning.

RI.6.6 Determine an author’s point of view or purpose in a text and explain how it is conveyed in the text.

RI. 6.7 Integrate information presented in different media formats as well as in words to develop a coherent understanding of a topic or issue. 

Understandings:

Students will understand..


  • How to analyze character traits using analytical reading.

  • How to discover the meaning of words and phrases, using context clues, figurative language, connotative, or technical meaning that the author may provide to help determine the definition of words.

  • How to read critically with the author's purpose in mind. Students will learn how to read context clues that may help them determine what the author is trying to convey. 



Essential Questions:


  • What is important about a key individual, event, or idea in the text?

  • What words or phrases is the author using to communicate the purpose of the text?

  • What is the author's point of view?

  • What are they trying to explain or convey to the reader?

  • What are the key points from the different media formats that the student is expected to understand?


Students will know:


  • How to identify in detail a key individual, event, or idea that is elaborated through a text.

  • How to determine the meaning of words and phrases the author is trying to convey.

  • What the author’s point of view and purpose is of the text.

  • What information presented in different media forms is relevant and comprehensive of the topic or main idea. 

Students will be able to:


  • Understand and interpret key individuals, events and main ideas from the text.

  • Understand the meaning of words and phrases, through context clues; they may not have known prior to reading the text.

  • Understand point of view and reading with the intention of finding the author's purpose.

  • Interpret information from different media formats to find relevant and cohesive information. 

  • Demonstrate and understanding of figurative connotative and technical meaning.

    Awesome creation of the backward design! How would you apply this to the age group you are getting you degree in? I am doing 7-12 certification with a 5-6 extension!

    1. Hi Julie, Thank you so much for the feedback!

      I am getting my certification in Childhood, grades 1-6. I would apply this by having the students review vocabulary words from the text, in addition to compare and contrast characters to understand different character traits. I would also have students identify the point of view, and what message the author is working to convey. The learning activities will change based on the grade.

    Nice job on your UbD Stage 1 assignment!
    In bullet 2 of your Students Will Know section, it sounds like you're alluding to students being able to use context clues effectively in their reading - especially as you state that in bullet 2 of your Students Will Be Able To section. If that's the case, you might want to use the term 'context clues' in your bullet 2 description under Students Will Know. That way, both you and the students are on the same page when it comes to your teaching language.
